Group’s mission is to restore true meaning of Memorial Day

MT. PLEASANT, Texas (KLTV) - It began in Dallas in 2011 as a march to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Now, Carry The Load’s Memorial Day march is a 32-day awareness campaign covering 40 states. The relay team was in East Texas on Friday as part of their 11,500-mile trek to honor the sacrifices of our nation’s military, veterans and first responders.

In its ninth year, Carry the Load event raises money for veteran assistance programs, honors the fallen

When you've lost a loved one in the military, every day is Memorial Day. Carry the Load continues to ask the rest of us to remember at least this one day each year.

DALLAS — When you've lost a loved one in the military, every day is Memorial Day.

The Carry the Load organization, now in its ninth year, continues to be the biggest event in North Texas. It asks all of us to be reverent on at least this one day of the year.

As is the custom at the Carry the Load event, held each Memorial Day weekend in Reverchon Park, a field of American flags lined the grass near the west end of the park.

Annual ‘Carry The Load’ Event Honors Meaning of Memorial Day

Over 30,000 Carry the Load volunteers walked day and night over Memorial Day weekend in honor of our nation's heroes.

"It's just amazing how everyone comes together to honor our fallen, one celebration, it's not about barbecues, it's about remembering who gave their lives for us," said Tammie Valeski with Patriot PAWS.

Men, women and children carried posters with the names of the service members who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"You can feel the spirit, there is a spirit here that's driving this and that makes it so special," said Hershel "Woody" Williams, a World War II veteran and Medal of Honor recipient.

Many march through Cape Girardeau to honor those that have fallen

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - Scores of people walked through Cape Girardeau to honor the sacrifices made by military, veterans, first responders and their families on Saturday.

SEMO Vets “March to the River” hosted the Carry the Load as they marched from Cape Girardeau County Park, through the streets of Cape Girardeau to the John Boardman Pavilion in downtown.

This is part of the Carry the Load Midwest Relay Team as they continue on their 3,900-mile journey from Minneapolis to Dallas.

Heartland News talked with SEMO Vets founding members Dave Cantrell, Alan Schoen, Rocky Everett and Matt McGill who said it's important they honor those that sacrificed their all.

Tyler, Texas (KETK) - Carry the Load will continue their 11,500-mile walk on Sunday, including East Texas in its path.

The campaign honors our nation's military, veterans, and first responders.

Non-profit organization Carry the Load works to remember fallen heroes

FORT HOOD — Participants in the Carry the Load — a walk and cycle event that honors fallen military and law enforcement members — from the West Coast made a stop in Fort Hood on Thursday to witness the third annual Carry the Load Rally.

About a dozen participants rallied at the 1st Cavalry Division Horse Detachment training area for the color guard posting of the colors, the national anthem sung by country music artist Carl Hutchens, a Vietnam veteran from Galena Park; and a demonstration by the horse detachment.

Carry the Load is a nonprofit organization providing a way to honor the nation’s military, law enforcement, firefighters, rescue personnel and their families.

CARRY THE LOAD: Riders, walkers saluting veterans arrive in town

With Memorial Day almost here, a patriotic group consisting of six bicycle riders and walkers peddled into Texarkana on Thursday afternoon to not only memorialize military veterans but also first responders.

The group, known as Carry The Load, made its seventh visit to Texarkana since organizing in West Point, N.Y., in 2012, said Stacy James, one of the supporters.

This time each year, the group bicycles and walks 3,800 miles in 32 days from West Point to Dallas with the Sunday before Memorial Day being their journey completion date in Dallas.

"Besides having this East Coast group, we also have a West Coast group that starts in Seattle, Wash., and goes to Dallas, and this year we started a midwestern group that comes from Minneapolis to Dallas," he said.
