Carry the Load organization honors active military, veterans, first responders and their families during national relay

As he peddled his way along Midway Road in rural Solano County Wednesday, Tom Wendling, a retired firefighter from Dallas, Texas was honoring the memory of fellow firefighter he had never met.

Wendling is volunteering his time and stamina as he rides in the 4,600-mile “Carry The Load National Relay,” which left Seattle last week and will arrive in Dallas on Memorial Day.

The group will join up with two other relays in Texas — one that left from West Point in New York and one that left from Minneapolis. Between the three relays, riders or walkers will cover more than 11,000 miles.
