Memorial Day initiative Carry The Load brings rally, walk to Bryan-College Station

Making a monthlong, 4,600-mile journey from Seattle to Dallas is no easy feat. But for Tom Wendling and his fellow volunteers, it’s the least they can do.

Wendling — a retired Dallas firefighter — is part of Carry The Load, a nonprofit that organizes a series of events around Memorial Day to honor military personnel and first responders. The group traveled through Bryan-College Station on Monday, holding a rally at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum before walking more than seven miles to Bryan Fire Station 1. Several community members joined the march, carrying flags and personal memories of the people they walked to honor.
